A slight setback

Well, we found out that Violet is going to have to get a helmet.

It sounds and looks very dramatic, but is very easy and apparently not all that uncommon these days with the whole "back to sleep" campaign by doctors.

The back of her head is basically flatter than it should be...its not something we want her to have to deal with as an adult (it would require surgery to fix later than age 2).
The helmut is basically cast by a scan done of her head, and then rather than using pressure, it has openings in the desired space the head should expand into. Making it look more normal. With all of her gorgeous hair, you can't tell at all, but when it's wet, its pretty darn flat back there. At least since we are going for the scan, we won't have to cut her hair! That would have been hard! The plaster casting would be much harder.

So because the helmet is a gentle process, it is very slow and she may have to wear the helmet as much as 23 hours a day for up to 6 months! (Not on her birthday, at the reunion, or for mothers day, :) - the doc said that was okay!)

I know, I was alarmed that it would be uncomfortable for her as well, but the doc assures me that a lot of babies actually like having it on, and the rest tolerate it really well. It's made of foam so it is really light and doesn't cover the entire head - I think it looks like a wrestling helmet - open at the top with a band across the forehead. Anyway I will let you all know when she gets the helmet and keep you updated on the progress!

Meanwhile, here are some pictures of her with her being incredibly grown up and adorable as usual.

Miss you all!
